Joan Mitchell was an American Abstract Expressionist painter and printmaker. Born in Chicago in 1925, attending Smith College in Massachusetts & The Art Institute of Chicago. She became a leading artist, influenced by Paul Cezanne, Wassily Kandinsky, Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, among others. She painted on unprimed canvases expressing gestural and abrasive brushstrokes. Mitchell's canvases were the two most expensive works by any woman artist sold at auction, according to auction database. During her lifetime, Mitchell was rewarded with a considerable degree of commercial success. Mitchell's work is part of many public collections including Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
